How net worth is calculated

Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. It's the single number that tells you whether your financial position is improving over time.

Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities

What to include in your net worth in India

Assets

  • Bank balances across savings, salary and NRE/NRO accounts
  • Fixed and recurring deposits at principal plus accrued interest
  • Mutual funds and stocks at current market value
  • PPF, EPF and NPS balances from your latest passbook or statement
  • Gold — jewellery, coins, gold funds or sovereign gold bonds — at today's value
  • Property at a realistic resale value, not the purchase price
  • Insurance with a surrender value, such as some endowment policies or ULIPs

Liabilities

  • Home loan — the outstanding principal, not the original loan amount
  • Car and two-wheeler loans
  • Personal and education loans
  • Credit card balances, including EMIs converted on your card
  • Loans against gold, property or securities
  • Money you owe family or friends, if you intend to repay it

From calculator to tracker

A one-time number is useful. A tracked number is powerful.

A calculator tells you where you stand today. Finotop's personal net worth tracker keeps every asset and liability in one place, so updating your net worth takes minutes rather than an afternoon with a spreadsheet.

  • Record each account once and update values when they change
  • See total assets, liabilities and net worth on your dashboard
  • Understand your asset allocation by type
  • Keep loan EMIs and card dues visible alongside your assets

Net worth questions

Is the data I enter in the net worth calculator saved?

No. The calculator on this page runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Finotop or stored. To track your net worth over time, create a Finotop account.

Should I include my home in my net worth?

It's common to include property at a realistic current market value, with the outstanding home loan recorded as a liability. Some people also look at a second figure without their primary residence, because a home you live in is not easily converted to cash. Whichever you choose, be consistent each time you review.

How often should I update my net worth?

Monthly or quarterly works well for most people. Updating after major events, such as a bonus, a big purchase or a loan prepayment, keeps the picture accurate without becoming a chore.

Is a negative net worth a problem?

Not necessarily. Early in a career, or soon after taking a home or education loan, liabilities can be larger than assets. The direction your net worth moves over time is more useful than any single number.

Do insurance policies count as assets?

Pure term insurance has no cash value, so it's usually left out. Policies with a surrender or cash value, such as some endowment plans and ULIPs, can be included at their current surrender value.
